Vendredi/ Friday 22.07.2011. Torshavn

First, Laila sends me an sms in the afternoon and tells me about a bomb explosion in Oslo. I go on the internet and the news are becoming more and more terrible.
Like everyone else I am shocked, upset and can not realize what happened. And all this the fact of one man. It is incomprehensible.
This morning, Saturday, we passed by the Norwegian consulate, which had the two flags at half mast. I put this picture.

Friday we went to visit Hjørdis’ theater school. This is actually the old wood shop of her father. She and Christian are champions of DIY, economy (they recover and use everything) and ingenuity for this school. They do not have grant only when they travel with their students. Hjørdis is passionate about her school. She has just taken a master of theater at the University of Copenhagen.
We go shopping with her at SMS (this is the name of the largest shopping center in Torshavn) and return to eat lunch, the three of us, on the boat. We even found a warm paté (varm leverpostej).
After lunch, I go, by bike, to visit the museum of history of the Faroe Islands. There is a section devoted to knitting. Here too, many women were knitting. But apparently the men carded and spun wool. The spinning wheels were big. The wool was not dyed. The colors were (and are) natural, white, beige, gray, all shades of brown and black. The women are knitting like we do in France, wool on the right index.
The models are perhaps less sophisticated than in Shetland (wool not so thin, less detailed patterns, simpler colours), but in return, the traditional sweaters are still very present. Young, old, men, women and children often wear a traditional sweater knitted at home.
I watched the old photos depicting the life in the old days, traditional costumes, boats and fishing history. Interesting.
Our stay in Torshavn is nearing its end, so we decided to go to a good restaurant tonight. The first one is full. The second one is full. We should have made a reservation. We ended up in a Chinese restaurant, very happy. The buffet was good and cheap.
